U.S. District Court Judge Joseph Laplante blocked Trump’s Executive Order banning birthright citizenship, preventing the administration from withholding citizenship from certain infants born in the United States.
The Supreme Court’s ruling on the matter in June focused on the authority of federal judges to issue nationwide injunctions, which have delayed the Trump Administration from enforcing various mandates since January 20 (including banning unconditional birthright citizenship). The Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 decision that judges had limited authority to issue injunctions but still permitted them to do so in cases involving class action lawsuits seeking relief for similar parties nationwide. Judge Laplante allowed plaintiffs in Concord, New Hampshire disputing the birthright citizenship ban to move forward as a class. This, in turn, allowed him to issue a new injunction which blocks the executive order from going into effect nationwide, once again.
