Haiti’s Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation has been reduced from 18 to 12 months. The decision, made by the Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, amends the June 4th, 2024 notice that provided the 18-month extension of Haiti’s TPS status to February 3rd, 2026. First time registration for TPS and any Haiti TPS designations will expire on August 3rd, 2025, pursuant to this notice.
TPS is a designation provided to people from particular countries whose homes have experienced crises that may directly affect the safety of the population, including natural disasters and armed conflict. Haiti has held a TPS designation since 2010 following an earthquake which left devastating damage to the country. Currently, Haiti is experiencing widespread gang violence and political instability, which was the reason for its TPS extension under the Biden Administration. However, the Department of Homeland Security has decided to reduce Haiti’s TPS designation by 6 months, now set to expire on August 3rd, 2025.
