Supreme Court Allows the Termination of Venezuela’s Protected Status

The Supreme Court has decided to allow the termination of Venezuela’s Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation. This ruling affects over 350,000 Venezuelan nationals currently residing in the United States under TPS.

In 2021, the Biden Administration gave Venezuelan citizens Temporary Protected Status due to the country’s political and economic instability, social unrest, and human rights abuses. On February 3rd, 2025, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced the termination of Venezuela’s TPS. Set to expire April 7th, 2025, an injunction by a U.S. District Court Judge temporarily blocked the termination. The Supreme Court, however, decided today that the Trump Administration may move forward with the termination.

Venezuela’s TPS termination is one of many actions taken under the Trump Administration’s “immigration reform” efforts. Under the new administration, over 150,000 aliens have been arrested with over 139,000 deportations (according to the White House website); additionally, Haiti’s TPS designation was reduced and Afghanistan’s TPS designation was officially terminated, effective July 14th, 2025. The administration’s immigration policy changes have been met with significant apprehension by many communities, as they are extensive and swiftly implemented.
