Proposed Rulemaking: Procedures for Asylum and Bars to Asylum Eligibility


The Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security (collectively, “the Departments”) are proposing to amend their respective regulations governing the bars to asylum eligibility. The Departments are also proposing to clarify the effect of criminal convictions and to remove their respective regulations governing the automatic reconsideration of discretionary denials of asylum applications.

The Departments are now accepting written or electronic comments on the proposed rule. Written or electronic comments must be submitted on or before January 21, 2020. Written comments postmarked on or before that date will be considered timely. The electronic Federal Docket Management System will accept comments prior to midnight eastern time at the end of that day.
