DHS Terminates Afghanistan’s Temporary Protected Status

Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, announced on May 12th that Afghanistan’s Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation will be terminated effective July 12th, 2025. Following consultations with various government agencies, it was determined that Afghanistan’s conditions no longer fulfill the requirements necessary for a TPS designation. This decision is based on the country’s “improved security situation, and its stabilizing economy,” according to Secretary Noem. Afghanistan’s TPS will expire on May 20, 2025, and will be terminated on July 12, 2025.
