Potential Changes to Ukraine’s Temporary Protected Status

This week, President Trump spoke to reporters in the Oval Office, where he made a remark surrounding Ukraine’s Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation.

Responding to a question posed by a reporter on Ukraine’s TPS designation, President Trump explained that there are ongoing debates surrounding whether it’s appropriate for Ukraine to remain under Temporary Protected Status and stating that he “will be making the decision pretty soon.”

The potential removal of Ukraine’s TPS is concerning, yet unsurprising, given the recent actions taken by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to terminate Venezuela’s TPS and reduce Haiti’s TPS from 18 to 12 months. Since the start of Ukraine’s TPS designation on April 19, 2022, almost 300,000 Ukrainians have fled to the United States to escape the war; now, these individuals are concerned to know that they may soon have to return to a country still experiencing extreme violence.

In addition to President Trump’s comments on Ukraine’s TPS, the United States recently decided to pause military aid to Ukraine and discontinue intelligence sharing, likely in efforts to encourage a peace treaty between Ukraine and Russia. The shift in the US-Russia-Ukraine relationship has sparked both curiosity and anxiety, as the international community attempts to understand these changes and anticipate the effects they will have moving forward.
